I wrote earlier in another post about how the guy at my local video store sait it wasnt worth it to buy the DVD and that he said nobody had bought one. I went there to rent another DVD and asked him about the SGU 1.0 DVD and this time he said that the store owner had sent most of his shipment back and traded the credit for a different title. LMAO. He said that they sold exactly 3 DVD sets out of the 100 they received...in a whole month! And he said the people whp bought them gave them as gifts. HAHAHAHAHA!
HAHAHAHA!!! there goes the "vocal minority" theory

"Take out everything that made Stargate enjoyable, put in everything that made Battlestar Galactica tedious and call it Stargete Universe."

That's from the Amazon Blu-ray reviews. That pretty well sums it all up.

Sold 3/100? LOL probably all of them to Tanith. Sent them back? Time to do some dumpster diving.

Way back when...

Just caught up on reading the blog (so you don't have to), and a blog regular there mentioned how she thought that things were better in the olden days.  I'm not sure if that's true.  I think sometimes we look back at certain eras and romanticize them, or look at them out of context.  That's just my opinion.  I'll expound upon it.  For instance, 1945 was during the ending of the Great Depression and WW2 Era.  Pearl Harbor had been attacked a few years prior to 1945, the year in which we dropped the atomic bomb in Hiroshima.  It was a time of war; and as a country, we could feel it.  Sure, we're at war now, but we don't feel it like we did - say - after the Twin Towers were attacked (from within).  People banded together then as well.  During a time of war and uncertainty, people always band together.  Yes, there's uncertainty now, but it's not at 911 or Pearl Harbor/WW2 levels.  Now, I'm not saying that people weren't more polite back then, or that there wasn't perhaps a generally more felt sense of community at that time.  However, some of this was by design in the sense that the world was smaller then through it being less globalized.  And yet, some might say that getting on a laptop and being able to chat with someone in Japan in real-time makes us more connected, not less.  It's all about perception.  And, there are many things I like about the olden days myself; I just don't want to go back and live in the past.  That's just a personal preference.  But, I'm fine with those that do.

For every person that wishes things/people could be as good as they were in 19__ , there is (or was) an elderly person that lived through that time period, yelling "You ungrateful little whopper-snap!  You don't know how good you have it.  Back in 19__ we didn't have half of the conveniences/opportunities that you enjoy today.  Why, back in my day, learning how to do without and making due with what you had was a daily occurrence... You're lucky this is your day, sonny!"

Which side is right?  Is it the person that believes that way back when..., everything and everyone was so much better, or at least people were kinder and more optimistic?  Or, is it the perception that (most) everything is better now than it was before.  Well, I think both sides have a valid point; my personal belief falls somewhere in the middle.

I remember my Nana telling me how back when she was young, there was never a need to lock the doors to the house, and that the sense of community was better then.  But, I also remember her telling me that women didn't have the rights/freedoms that they experience today (minorities too), and how modern conveniences (like the washer/dyer) are able to get done in a relatively short period of time what used to take all day, or even days.

The author of an article someone at the blog posted a link to certainly notices a lot of negativity and dourness in Americans today.  I've had the fortune to only have been around a few people in my life that notice so much that is wrong with America(ns), and they themselves were negative nellies.  That's not saying that with America(ns) there are no problems, as there are also problems (more or less) in other countries and, possibly, their people too.  Reading that article would have been depressing if I didn't believe it to be at least slightly hyperbolic.  My suggestion to the author would be to find a new crowd; better friends and/or a more cheerful environment really does tend to help.

I just think that if all a person sees is negativity whenever they look up, then they either need to change something about their perspective, or look outside of the negative bubble they've been living in.

My belief is that there's always something to be grateful for, and there's always something to complain about.  It doesn't matter what time you live in.  There have always been, and will be, pessimists and optimists, and the realists that try to balance the other two groups.

The reality of SGU is that it is currently far below par for the kind of show that it is attempting to be, and terrible as a Stargate show.  Good luck to Mr. Mallozzi and his associates in making the changes (or not) that they may feel are necessary for SGU's future (?).  And, as far as "still watching" SGU is concerned, I said "Good riddance" to that a nice while ago.

Interesting Quote from the Blog:

"In my opinion “Stargate fans”, from a social standpoint, generally live sheltered lives. They don’t go to clubs, pick up girls/guys every night, and have one night stands. The reason they are so opposed to these new characters and especially their actions, are because they don’t understand them. They can’t comprehend the fact that if you are stuck with no hope of ever returning, you are going to be emotionally unstable. You will seek comfort from those around you, and for some people, physical interaction is their form of security. If you put yourself in the characters shoes you will see that they are actually being true to who they are, and what their background is. I am not one of the typical “Stargate fans”, not that there is anything wrong with them. Which is why I think I can see more clearly than others on this issue.
Again, please let me stress that there is nothing wrong with Dungeons & Dragons, owning more than 5 cats, or living in your parents basements."

Let me start out by saying that I don't own any cats, I don't live in a basement (never have), and that I like video games, but I am hardly a gamer.  Who is this guy?  Wow.  Picking up a new girl/guy every night for a one night stand is not something you do if you care anything about your health.  There are STDs that don't go away, and that a condom doesn't prevent you from contracting (herpes/genital warts).  So, I'm cool with the guys that go and bang a new chick every night, but that's not me.  I don't think that's most people.  I only partially agree with his assessment that all of the sexcapades and craziness that we've seen are the characters "being true to who they are" because who they are is really messed up.  Someone made an argument that it's possible for many of the people on the Icarus base to have passed their psychological tests when they shouldn't have.  I remember covering this subject in college, and it's true.  But, the likelihood of this many people having gone under the psychological radar for the Icarus project is almost non-existent.  I could understand one making it through (perhaps Rush), but practically everyone?  Come on.  Give me a break.

Let's just say that this guy is right (he's not) about Stargate fans around the world.  Then, wouldn't it make TPTB look even worse?  I mean, I'm not a writer, but I know that one of the first rules in writing is to "know your audience", and apparently, TPTB don't.  But hey, they're not alone; apparently this guy doesn't understand Stargate fans, or maybe even just people, in general either.

Well, that's it for now.

Bye, Bye.

The Worst Trivia Contest Ever!

Just read the blog (so you don't have to), and Mr. Mallozzi is doing an SGU trivia contest.  The first 3 people to respond correctly to the whopping 25 questions win ... something.   Mr. Mallozzi didn't really specify the prize.  I call this the worst trivial contest ever because, well, would you want to go through these episodes (think of watching Life again) to get all of these questions right?  Or, even worse, what if someone is able to answer this stuff right off of the top of their head?  If that were the case for anyone, then perhaps loving friends and family would need to stage an intervention.  LOL.  No one should be that into SGU.  But, that's just my take on it.

Here's the link:

http://josephmallozzi.wordpress.com/2010/02/08/february-8-2010-sgu-trivia-contest/

Some of the responses are quite detailed.

Well, that's it for now.

Bye, Bye.

DUDE. You are WRONG about not being a writer. I dont know what you do for a living, but I think you missed your calling. You are an EXCELLENT writer. You express your ideas clearly, you can encapsulate your thoughts in cleverly worded phrasesand lighten the tone with humor, and use double entendre in clever and amusing ways...I am being honest here. Some of your commentary rivals that of my favorite critics. Just thought you should know.

Thanks, Kobe.  Now, you're making me self-conscious about posting because I don't always tend to correct typos and I'm not that concerned with grammar since none of us are writing a thesis here.  It's odd because I've been told that I should be a writer, or that I would write a book someday, since I was about 11, but it really started when I was 12.  My parents put me in a summer academic program that I had to qualify for, and there was a weekly paper that the journalism kids put together there.  I wasn't one of them; I was mostly trying my hand at architecture at the the time (that didn't work out), but they would ask me to write something, or ask if they could put something I had written into the paper each week.

This sort of thing continued on through college.  One of my writing professors even suggested that I get a job writing policy for corporate companies (boring!).   But, I have ended up being asked to write and/or clarify a policy here or there in my current field of work.  I've been thinking of trying something different, lately.  I don't know.  I tend to be both scatter-brained and detail oriented.  I don't know how well that mix works for professional writing.  Yeah, I think I should stay away from it.

Thanks again, Kobe.

P.S.
I checked out your Avatar review.  You're not too shabby at writing, yourself.

O - M - G

You know, when I first saw those images and some of the slurs that were “replies“, I thought that it was either a couple of crazy weirdoes’ idea of a “good time”, or someone connected with SGU trying to discredit us as a hate site.

The sad thing is, if classicgatefan is the culprit, then I’m not surprised.   There were at least about a dozen posts from “jobbysandcornbread” and “Jew”.  I didn’t read or look at all of them, but I saw some of what was said and more than enough of the pictures.  I think I only clicked on  3 threads before I was done.  It was too much.

I remember the last thread that we all spoke/debated on.  I also know that I had been sensing that she was having problems for a few days by then.  When people that suffer from depression are in the throes of that disease, they can be really snappy, nasty, and negative, and not even know it.  But, if she is responsible for the other night, then I think she’s got more going on than just depression.  I think that perhaps it could have been a vindictive move on her part to get back at us.  The sad thing is, we were never against her.  I know that I wasn’t against her.  She just couldn’t see that.

I didn’t share this yesterday.  But, I went and checked the email address that I use for this forum then, and her last post was there as an email.  I can say that she was falling apart.  I really do feel bad about what her illness is putting her through, and I hope that she gets the help that she needs.

Driver, I think you made a wrong turn...

Okay, I didn't expect I'd be up doing this now.  But, here goes:

I just caught up on reading the blog (so you don't have to), and 4 people (yes, 4) won a free SGU Season 1.0 box-set that most everyone else doesn't want and won't pay any kind of money for.  Now that that's out of the way, let me get to the real point of this late-night posting.  A poster on the blog gave a link to an article entitled The Double-Edged Sword Of Devotion, where the author had a problem with Chuck fans freaking out over things temporarily not going where they want them to go fast enough.  I agreed that the show is just fine, and I'll post the comment that I left there in a bit.

The poster at Mr. Mallozzi's blog seemed to believe that this article was a statement in defense of the shenanigans that have been going on in Stargateville that TPTB are responsible for.   I think not.  But, Mr. Mallozzi welcomed the support and posted his praise in the comments section of the article.  This leads to my post  :

@Ms. Holmes and Mr. Mallozzi

Let me start out by saying that “Chuck” is working just fine for me.  I know that Chuck and Sarah are going to end up together, and that what’s happening now is just adding to the, as you say, “payoff“ in the end.  The writers do a great job at writing for the TEAM, and in giving the audience funny, action-packed, and entertaining episodes each week.  I believe that the writers of the show have made it clear that Chuck and Sarah will be together in the end.  I personally like “Superman” being a part of the team for awhile.  I also think that “The Office” made it clear that Jim and Pam were meant for each other.  We saw this with the “payoff” on that show too.  “The Office” is another show that does a great job at being a wonderful comedy.

Another television show that I enjoyed was Stargate Atlantis (SGA).  It was unfortunately, and prematurely, cancelled after its 5th season for unknown reasons.  Or, at least, I haven’t been able to find any clear and concrete reasons.  Had SGA had more “payoffs”, or any payoffs really, then I think more of it’s fans would have had an easier time accepting its end.  If I were going to go with the bus metaphor/analogy, then I would say that I don’t know anyone who gets on a bus with no idea of why they got on, or where the bus is supposed to be taking them.  Sure, you may not know how it’s going to get there.  You trust the driver to know.  But, you certainly don’t hop on the bus to Cleveland when you’re headed for Chicago.

I remember being in high school, and one day we had a substitute bus driver.  He was not at all familiar with our route.  He made a wrong turn, and everyone on the bus let him know that to get him back “on track”.   Sometimes passengers (audiences) can be more knowledgeable about a certain “route” than the people in charge want to give them credit for.

Almost everyone that gets on a bus has a destination.  People that get on the same bus either have the same destination, or at least need to travel down the same route until they get to their stop.  It is the driver’s job to take them where they want to go, otherwise, why be on the bus?  Some people have asked themselves that very question about Stargate Universe (SGU).

The main problem with that show (bus) is that it chose the “Stargate route” to get to its destination, or Destiny.  That “route” has a 15 year history, or trail, that the riders (audience) are very familiar with.  Some people are happy with staying on the bus, others aren’t.  The drivers of this new bus are the same.  And, they are telling their regular riders that the bus is still the “Stargate bus”.  It will just be going to a new and exciting place, on a darker and grittier path.  That’s like getting on a bus in Idaho labeled “New York”, and you see from the Highway and Freeway signs that it’s headed west.  Eventually, someone is going to mention that perhaps the driver either made a wrong turn, or is driving the wrong bus.  Then, the driver tells everyone that it’s still the “New York” bus, he’s just taking a new and more exciting route to get to a better and more interesting place.  It is what it is.

I’m still loving “Chuck”, though.  Good luck to all.  Thanks.

I just figured that I'd add this over here, just in case something happens to it over there.  Time to hit the hay.

Well, that's it for now.

Bye, Bye.

I am also hoping that Classicgatefan was not "jobbysandcornbread” and “Jew" because those were seriously sick images, that requires immediate professional help.
