Suggestions for forum changes

TX
I really like this site and the forum. Gateworld was getting more and more annoying with its censoring, so I am glad for an alternative. But I think the forum could be better with a few changes.

1. As much as I like SG1 and SGA, I think the videos shouldn't start automatically, at least not with the sound on. After a while it gets irritating.

2. When you are on the starting page and then click on "forum" you get on this site:
http://www.sgusucks.com/forum.html
At the bottom of this page are two stargates and only the right one let people to the forum, the left one is a way back to the starting page. I think this is not good. I would remove the left stargate. And I would add some writing under the right stargate: "Click on the stargate to get to the forum" or something like this, so that really everyone will know at once how they can reach the forum. It should be as easy as possible to find the forum.

3. I think the colours of the whole site need changes. The background is black and the writing light blue. That isn't a good contrast. I bet that people with bad eyes find it hard to read the writings.
And why is the background so dark anyway? I agree that SGU is dark and depressing and not very inviting and that the Destiny seriously could need some light bulbs, but that still is no good reason to imitate the series! I think we would get more people on this forum, if it looks more welcoming and the colour scheme is an important part to this. Make it please lighter and less dark!

4. I think for a better overview in the forum, a few subcategories would be helpful. The forum is getting bigger and bigger and because of that less clear. Just a few suggestions:

You could introduce a subcategory for episodes discussions. I read that some people wanted to write reviews for the episodes. Those threads and older ones concerning episodes could go into this subcategory.

And a subcategory for threads about the TPTB and actors. Threads which are about stupid interviews or comments they write could go into such a category.

And a subcategory for threads which concern the market success or more accurately not success of SGU. Threads about the ratings, DVD sales, bad reviews on amazon, and so on could go in this subcategory. Threads which are about facts and not only opinions.

And then a subcategory for the rest.

That are just some suggestions from me. I don't know if all are even technical possible on this site. I am curious what you think about my ideas and I am interested in other suggestions.

Yes that auto Youtube song irritates the hell outta me too. I was on a 27" in the Apple Store and pulled up the site. The sound was cranked so everyone in the store jumped. (LOL )

Reverse chronologic order for posts? I always have to scroll and select to find the current discussion page.

Break the forum into general discussion and hard-core. As funny as Mallozzi's pig-sticker is to me, it's likely not to all tastes and may be costing viewers. And ban the one or two SGU idiots here from posting in one of them. Yeah, I like that: The Hard Core Hater's Room. I'd like to let people really know what I think of this steaming pile ...

Otherwise great effort put into it.  Have you lined up any sponsors like Gayteworld?

All great suggestions and apparently many will be put into place.  However i like the dark background as it fits my mood but you are probably right.  I am a go-with-the-flow guy so whatever happens I am for it.  Just don't make the color patterns too bright.

Hey, TX

Thanks for the suggestions.  Here goes my reply:

I completely agree about the videos.  If we can't get it to where they are automatically off when you reach the forum, then I'm going to see about having them removed to see what that's like (in my opinion, better).  If most people want them back, then they can let us know.

The reason that the 2 stargates are there is because we had some people (mainly pro-sgu people) that were upset that when they came to the forum, they saw topics/pictures/and discussions that were not "PG" rated.  Apparently they were trying to read the forum along with their 8 yr.-old child (j/k).  Since we are not using GW's restrictive policy when it comes to how/what people post, we thought it would be a good idea to let people (especially first timers) know what they're getting into.  It also informs people (through the never* link) of the very few things that are not acceptable.  We have had some posts here (although a rare few) that we've had to remove because their content was waaaaay too over the top.  So, for these reasons, I do stand by the page with the gates being there.   But, if most people want it gone, then we'll see.

As for the captioning of the gates, I agree with you.  We used to have a caption under the closed gate that said something like "take me back" so that someone could go back to the main page after reading the opening statement for the forum.  And, under the active and open gate, we had a caption that read something like "I'm fine, let me enter."  I agree that these captions should return to lessen confusion.  I will look into this for you.

I personally like the forum colors.  The dark blue background and the light blue writing works for me.  But, we are going to have a dual (and expanded) site, like Overmind One said, and that forum will be vBulletin formatted, which is very bright.  So, you will be getting what you want there, soon.

It will be similar to GW's forum, which once upgraded was too bright for many people that spoke of having vision issues.  However, I believe that this forum (here) will still be available for those that like the darker background (like myself), and there will always be the option of dimming the screen for those of us that think the GW forum is too bright.

I think that it will be pretty cool that everyone will have something they like (dark background here, bright background there) once the expanded site is up.  It's going to look great!

These are all GREAT suggestions!  And, like Overmind One mentioned, this is already and currently being set up with the expanded site.  We can always take all of the help we can get.  So, please keep the feedback coming.  And, if there's anything you'd like to help with, please let us know.

vBulletin lets the user choose to sort threads in whatever order they want, it allows for private forums based on Usergroups controlled by the Mods, it has a Private messaging system with integrated email and Skype, it will have smart YouTube embedding, and we can ban people based on IP address...so much more.

We can even create a special "brig" for users who have been temprarily banned. It also has a built in infraction system which will take action based on the number of infractions given by users. It will be great.

But the last part about the sponsors...thats why I have decided to donate the space to sgusucks.com on my servers because I dont think we need ANY sponsors. That adds a level of compromise that I think could be used as leverage. I have no interests in financial gain and only want to protect the independence and existence of this site.
vBulletin, awesome, quite frankly, this forum annoys the shit outa me.
It lacks a lot of features i expect from a forum, like sub-fora, a user control center, PM system, thread subscription (not post subscription) etc. pp.

Also we need to get this site off of Weebly, i can provide some space and a layout.

Yes yes i know i already promised this like 3 weeks ago, but seriously, shit is hitting the fan at work and my laptop blew up again IN CUSTOMER SERVICE, so i need to get a new PC which will set me back at least 1200$ (im not settling with anything under a corei7 8GB RAM and a Radeon 4850HD).
And it doesnt help that i only earn 1300$ a month.

But i promise, as soon as i got this sorted (in a month or so) im going to make this site glorious with all the shinyness of Web2.0 :P

Why thank you for your offer! But I have already allotted a whole gigabyte of space for this place, set up the forums and the database, and started adding some products and themes to it. The Webmaster, Atlantis4Life and myself have been working behind the scenes in preparation for the migration and if you have skills in this area, you are most definitely welcome!

vBulletin system is 3.8.1, and the forums and subforums are being staged on one of my web servers. This place will remain in place until the Webmaster feels it necessary to close it. I have been saying the same thing as you about Nabble and Weebly since the day I got here. I know that the macro-whiners (TPTB) will use a similar trick like running to Nabble or Weebly and searching for TOS violations to shut the place down. I am a top level domain hosting company and TPTB cant touch me. But they can demand removal of copyrighted materials if posted. Embedded YouTube does not count, and neither do parodies.
I was more talking about the site, SGUSUCKS.com with the layout and migration, less about the forum, i dont know that much about Forum-design and id rather not dabble in it.

Except if you need a banner or something.

I don't matter to me if the videos are there or not as long as they don't start automatically with the sound on. If it is not possible to have them automatically off, it is definitely better to remove them like they are now.

I have no problem with the warning page.

It is better now. The first time I visited this site it took a while until I found the forum because I first clicked the left stargate and was wondering why I was again on the main page.

No, I never posted anything in the SyFy forum. I needed a user name for this site and just chose randomly two letters on the keyboard. I am not very creative in regards to user names.

Yeah, you, me, and apparently most everyone else prefers the music to not play automatically.  Thanks for letting us know.  It's great to get that kind of feedback so that we can improve everyone's time at the site.

I'm sorry you had that experience.  But again, thanks for your feedback.  Your feedback helped us to remember to put the captions (they were taken down after some updates to the site were done) back so that this doesn't happen to someone else when they visit the site for the first time.  Cheers
